According to what was observedcompassIn more than one market, the prices of fresh chicken ranged between two and a half dinars, reaching a maximum of two dinars and 75 piasters until Monday evening.
Citizens complained that the price of chicken “Natafa” per kilogram ranged between 170 and 190 piasters in the governorates, and two dinars in some areas of the capital, Amman.
In turn, the Consumer Protection Association called on the relevant regulatory authorities to intensify control over the markets and control manipulation operations, while at the same time calling on citizens to boycott chicken in the event of continued price increases.
Weather conditions
The government and poultry farmers, in turn, confirmed that the volatile weather caused the death of large quantities of chickens during the past days, which led to poor supply and high prices in the markets, expressing optimism that chicken prices will decrease during the days of Eid al-Adha with the citizens’ demand for the ritual of sacrifice and the availability of sacrificial meat.
During the past two days, the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply revealed the reason for the rise in chicken prices, stressing that this is due to the death of large numbers of chicken birds due to weather fluctuations.
The ministry affirmed that it will continue to monitor chicken prices locally and will not hesitate to take any necessary measures to maintain the stability of prices and prevent their unjustified rise.
Claims to understand the reasons
The head of the Poultry Investors Association, Abdul Shakour Jamjoom, confirmed that many circumstances affect the rise in chicken prices, such as deaths, weather fluctuations, and lack of quantities.
He added, in his interview with the Voice of Hayat program on Hayat FM, that the increase in chicken prices is usually temporary and linked to certain circumstances, and then the prices return to normal at the end of the circumstance.
He called on citizens to understand the rise in chicken prices and to feel the conditions that chicken farmers are going through, as a result of the weather fluctuations in recent days.
He continued, “Many commodities have increased in price, and we have not seen a protest like the one who gets the price of chicken.”
He expected a drop in chicken prices during Eid al-Adha, due to people’s demand for meat and sacrificial animals.
waving boycott
In turn, the National Society for Consumer Protection demanded the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply to set fair price ceilings for chicken of all kinds because of its exaggeratedly high prices and does not reflect the cost of its production in such a period of the year.
The Head of Consumer Protection, Dr. Muhammad Obeidat, confirmed that the association received, during the past week, hundreds of complaints from citizens from various governorates of the Kingdom, in which they expressed their strong dissatisfaction with the exaggerated prices at which this substance is sold, which cannot be dispensed with on the tables of Jordanians, especially as it is considered an alternative to meat. Therefore, red must be sold at fair prices and commensurate with the purchasing power of citizens.
Obeidat said that the complaints received by the association were divided into two parts. The first part is related to the high prices of chicken (fresh and raw), where the price of one kilogram of raw chicken is sold between 170 and 190 piasters in the governorates, and two dinars in some areas of the capital, Amman, and fresh chicken has reached More than two and a half dinars. As for the second part of the complaints, it was about the unavailability of this substance on the shelves of malls and stores in sufficient quantities and with different weights as a result of some of them selling it in pieces at very high prices that are not commensurate with the real costs of its production, and medium and low-income people cannot buy it. from 1000 gr.
Obeidat called on the relevant regulatory authorities to intensify control over the markets, control the manipulations that occur, and work to force these stores to provide sufficient quantities of chicken at fair prices for all parties to the exchange process.
And he indicated that in the event of a lack of response and the prices remain high, the boycott option is on the table, as citizens will be invited to boycott the purchase and consumption of chicken of all kinds for a specific period until the prices return to what they were in the past.
