The Director of Health Awareness and Media at the Ministry of Health, Ghaith Owais, said that the number of deaths due to smoking amounts to approximately 9,500 deaths annually in Jordan.
Owais added, during an intervention on “Al-Mamlaka” channel, on Tuesday, that 66% of men in Jordan smoke, adding that the smoking rates among children from 13-15 years are 25%, according to the latest census.
And the percentage of smoking electronic cigarettes for men is 16% and for women is 3%.
He pointed out that smoking costs Jordan economically about one billion and 600 million dinars, pointing out that Jordan is one of the first countries in the world to smoke.
He explained that the percentage of smoking in Jordan for men and women is about 42%, indicating that smoking is an epidemic in Jordan.
Secretary of the “No Smoking” Association, Larisa Al-War, said that the legislation in Jordan is insufficient to control the types of tobacco, pointing out that there is no seriousness on the part of the state to combat smoking in all its forms.
Al-War showed that exposing a child to secondhand smoke changes brain chemistry, explaining that the environment in Jordan is supportive of child smoking.
