The Consumer Protection Association warned of unjustified increases in a number of food commodities in the markets.

The association received several complaints related to the increase in the prices of rice and sugar during the last period.

And the head of the association, Muhammad Obeidat, said in a statement to:compass“These increases are not justified, because there has been no change in their prices on the global stock exchanges at such high rates, especially since the prices of international oil derivatives have decreased, which has led to a decrease in transportation and shipping costs.

The head of the association called on the citizens not to rush to the markets and buy in excess quantities, because this matter will increase the prices. He also called on the citizens to buy brands whose prices did not rise in the markets.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) index of world food prices fell, in May, to its lowest level in two years, as the significant declines in the prices of vegetable oils, grains and dairy products outweighed the increases in the prices of sugar and meat.

And the United Nations organization stated, on Friday, that its index, which tracks the prices of the most traded food commodities globally, reached an average of 124.3 points in May, compared to 127.7 points after adjustment in the previous month.

This month’s reading is the lowest since April 2021, which means that the general index is now 22% lower than the highest level it reached in March 2022, that is, after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.

The FAO grain price index declined by about 5% from the previous month, due to pressure from the potential for abundant supply, in addition to the extension of the grain export treaty from the Black Sea ports.

The FAO Vegetable Oil Price Index fell by nearly 9% on a monthly basis, reflecting large supplies of oilseeds and weak demand for palm oil. Prices of dairy products fell by more than 3%, amid a seasonal increase in milk production in the northern half of the world. .
