The ancient city of Petra continued to grow in the number of its visitors from all over the world. During the first five months of this year, about 610,722 visitors of various nationalities visited the city, according to official statistics issued by the Petra Development and Tourism Region.

About 139,685 thousand of different nationalities visited Petra during the month of May, with a growth rate of 42% from last year and 59% from 2019, according to official statistics.

The number of visitors to the city of foreign nationalities during last May was about 119,128 visitors, 4,912 of Arab nationalities, in addition to 13,982 visitors of Jordanians.

The head of the Petra Council of Commissioners, Suleiman Al-Farajat, said that Petra continues to increase in the number of visitors, expecting it to reach one million visitors at the end of next October, and that Petra will end its tourism year with a record number of one and a half million visitors.

Al-Farajat added that the authority is continuing to implement programs and projects that will increase the number of visitors, diversify the tourism product and enrich the visitor’s experience. Last month, the Petra Pink Nights Festival was held, which enhanced the presence of Arab and local visitors.

Al-Farajat emphasized that this growth in the number of visitors comes as a result of partnership with all relevant official authorities, private sector institutions and the local community, and that the authority seeks through this partnership to improve the reality of Petra and the product and service provided to its visitors.

He revealed that the authority will take more measures during the summer in preparation for the next season, including organizing the archaeological site, continuing to improve services and launching more programs, in a way that provides the visitor with a unique tourism experience.

Al-Farajat pointed out that Petra will open more hotel rooms during the first half of this year, in addition to the implementation of many service projects that seek to improve the status of infrastructure in the region.

Al-Farajat renewed the Petra region’s keenness to provide the best for this international tourist city, which will reflect positively on the development of local communities and the tourism sector.

Last May witnessed the inauguration of the cultural village in the small Petra area, which will constitute a qualitative addition to the tourism product, and many activities will be held in it that seek to attract visitors from various tourist markets.
