The unemployment rate decreased during the first quarter of this year, by about 1%, to reach 21.9%, compared to the same period last year, according to what the General Statistics Department said on Wednesday.

The department said in a statement, “The unemployment rate during the first quarter of 2023 was (21.9%), a decrease of 0.9 percentage points from the first quarter of 2022, and a decrease of 1.0 percentage points from the fourth quarter of 2022.”

The unemployment rate for males during the first quarter of 2023 was 19.6%, compared to 30.7% for females, according to the statement. As a result, “it becomes clear that the unemployment rate for males has decreased by 0.9 percentage points, and it has decreased for females by 0.8 percentage points, compared to the first quarter of 2022.”

And by comparing the unemployment rate for the first quarter of 2023 with the fourth quarter of 2022, “it becomes clear that the unemployment rate has decreased for both males and females by 1.0 percentage points,” according to the statement.

According to the statement, the results of the Department of Statistics showed that “it was high among university degree holders (unemployed individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, divided by the labor force for the same academic qualification), as it reached 25.8% compared to other educational levels.”

The results indicated that 54.9% of the total unemployed are holders of a secondary certificate or higher, and that 44.7% of the total unemployed had educational qualifications below secondary school.

The percentage of the unemployed varied according to the educational level and gender, as the percentage of unemployed males holding a bachelor’s degree or higher was 26.7%, compared to 79.5% for females, according to the statement.

The unemployment rate among youth in the age group 15-24 years reached 46.1% of the total (42.1% for males compared to 64.1% for females).

As for the governorates, the highest unemployment rate was recorded in Al-Balqa governorate at a rate of 26.4%, and the lowest unemployment rate was recorded in the Madaba governorate at a rate of 18.3%.

Whereas, the percentage of the employed out of the total population, aged 15 years and over, was 26%.

60.5% of the male workers were concentrated in the age group 20-39 years, while the percentage for females reached 60.2%, according to the statement, which indicated that 48.6% of the workers had educational qualifications less than secondary, 8.9% secondary, and 41.8% higher than. secondary.

The results showed that the majority of the employed, 85.3%, are paid employees (83.1% for males compared to 94.9% for females).

The results showed a “clear disparity” in the distribution of the labor force according to educational level and gender, as 57.5% of the total male labor force had educational levels below secondary level, compared to 11.0% for females.

The results indicated that 71.5% of the total female labor force had a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared to 26.4% among males.

The revised economic participation rate (the labor force attributed to the population aged 15 years and over) reached 33.3% (53.3% for males compared to 13.7% for females) for the first quarter of 2023 compared to 33.2% (53.2% for males and 13.7% for females) for the first quarter The first of 2022.
