A medical team at the King Hussein Cancer Center succeeded in performing the first qualitative operation in Jordan and the region on a 65-year-old patient suffering from liver cancer. This is done by removing a 2-cm-sized liver tumor located between the left and middle hepatic vein using the nanoknife technique. It is the latest non-thermal cautery method used to eliminate cancerous tumors, under the guidance of computed tomography via interventional radiology, as the patient left the center the morning after the operation, which took nearly two hours.
The Director General of the King Hussein Cancer Center stated; Dr. Assem Mansour stated that the King Hussein Cancer Center will remain a pioneer in keeping abreast of the latest developments in the field of cancer diagnosis and treatment, providing all modern technologies for Jordanian and Arab patients, and investing in the human element, which is the cornerstone of health care. This would not have been possible without building a network of partnerships with major international centers for the exchange of expertise and transfer of technology.
Dr. Khalil Al-Qarraa said; Consultant interventional radiologist at the King Hussein Cancer Center that this new technique is effective in eliminating cancerous tumors that are less than (3) cm in size and those that cannot be removed surgically, with a high success rate that may reach more than (85%). Stressing that what distinguishes this technique is that it does not affect the integrity of the veins and arteries adjacent to the tumor to be removed and does not affect the bile ducts if used to eliminate tumors of the liver and pancreas, indicating that this technique is used in general to eliminate tumors of the liver and pancreas and more recently to eradicate prostate tumors Which are adjacent to vital parts such as the main veins and arteries that do not allow surgical removal and do not allow the use of other cautery techniques.
He explained that this surgical technique is one of the latest techniques for cauterizing tumors by means of interventional radiology, as it does not affect the temperature of the tumor like other cautery techniques. To induce penetration of the cell’s plasma membrane and create nano-holes in it to disrupt the cellular homeostasis, so the cancer cell dies due to necrosis caused by membrane rupture or secondary breakdown of the membrane. This process does not lead to an increase in the temperature in the cell, and thus the cancer cells are destroyed without affecting the vital parts adjacent to the tumor such as arteries and veins.
Al-Qarra’a stated that the interventional radiology department at the center provides all tumor cauterization techniques that keep pace with the global techniques used in the most advanced cancer treatment centers in the world, such as: radioablation, microwave ablation, and cryoablation.
