The 32nd Arab Summit, which was launched in the Saudi city of Jeddah, sparked angry and critical reactions on social media due to the presence of the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, and the participation of the President of the Syrian regime, Bashar al-Assad, for the first time since 2011.
And through the hashtag (The Arab Summit does not represent me), which has become a trend (the most circulated), activists and observers published their tweets, which I monitored.compass.”
And about Bashar al-Assad’s participation, journalist Yasser al-Za’tara said, even if he heads the “Arab Summit” or gives speeches at the United Nations. His image will remain the same in the consciousness of the majority of the people of this nation, and for those who are biased towards man everywhere.”
And he added, in his tweet on Twitter, “Syria is the massacre of the century without dispute.”
The Saudi Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman, shook hands with the head of the Syrian regime, Bashar al-Assad, at the summit, and hugged him before taking an official photo of the two before the meeting began.
In front of the Arab leaders, at the outset of the summit, bin Salman welcomed Bashar al-Assad’s return to attend the meetings of the Arab League.
The head of the Syrian regime, Bashar al-Assad, said that the Arab summit is a “historic opportunity” to address the crises in the region, during his speech at the summit.
“I hope that (the summit) marks the beginning of a new phase of Arab action for solidarity among us, for peace in our region, development and prosperity instead of war and destruction,” al-Assad told the leaders and representatives of Arab countries.
This is the first time that al-Assad has delivered a speech to the League since the suspension of the Syrian regime’s membership in it in 2011, following the campaign launched by the Syrian security forces after protests against his rule.
For its part, the Syrian National Coalition said, “The Syrian people will not abandon their aspirations for freedom and independence, even if they remain alone. They will continue their revolution and rise up against Assad until the expected freedom is wrested, justice is achieved, and a democratic Syria is built.”
Although the Emir of the State of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, headed his country’s delegation, the Amiri Diwan said today, Friday, that the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, left suddenly after heading his country’s delegation at the Arab League summit in Jeddah.
The Emir of Qatar did not appear to make a speech at the summit, which was being covered live.
Qatar is one of the Arab countries that has openly declared that it will not change its position on the Syrian regime until the aspirations of the people who revolted against the oppression they were subjected to are fulfilled.
Zelensky’s previously unannounced call aroused our disapproval and astonishment among some of the tweeters:
The Ukrainian president accused Arab leaders of “turning a blind eye” to Russia’s actions in his country, calling for a unified position to “save people” from Russian prisons.
“Unfortunately, there are some in the world, and among you here, who turn a blind eye to prisons and the illegal annexation” of Ukrainian lands, he said, adding: “I am sure we can all unite in rescuing people from the cages of Russian prisons.”
Zelensky urged the countries at the summit to support his peace initiative to end the Russian war in his country, and said that the delegations would receive the text of the 10-point peace plan, and asked them to work with Ukraine directly without intermediaries.
A number of Arab leaders will be absent from the summit, including the President of the UAE, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, the Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad, and the Sultan of Oman, Haitham bin Tariq. At the level of the Maghreb, the Moroccan monarch, King Mohammed VI, and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune are absent. The head of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, is also absent.
