The Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center in Huntington Beach, California, has become home to more than 500 orphaned animals left behind by their mothers. “They came and it was like rain, but they were babies,” said Executive Director Debbie McGuire.
McGuire said she would expect to receive the smallest critters this time of year, but the influx was out of the ordinary. Within two weeks, the center had received 257 mallard ducklings, 100 opossums, 77 hummingbirds, 57 squirrels and several raccoons from Concerned Orange County Residents”.
In turn, Mai Trung – a resident of Santa Ana – said, “I am very worried because there are a lot of stray cats in my neighborhood, so I took the box and put a towel over it and brought it into the house,” according to the website.cbsnews“.
The cost of caring for each of the baby animals in the nursery is about $125, and the animals will stay anywhere between two to four months. It may continue later this year because it was a little late in the beginning because of all the rain.”

Wildlife specialists at the care center worry that there will not be enough funds to support them during the baby season, as the Wetland and Wildlife Care Center relies on donations to keep operating.
