Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Dr. Nassar Al-Haisah, expressed his appreciation and thanks to the European Union for its continuous support to Jordan, to enable it to continue its humanitarian role towards the Syrian refugees and the Palestinian camps.
Al-Haisah called on the Commissioner-General to visit Jordan to see the status of the Syrian refugee camps and the Palestinian camps.
He reviewed the burdens borne by Jordan as a result of hosting waves of refugees, which put pressure on its infrastructure and a drain on its natural resources, in addition to the increase in unemployment among Jordanian youth.
Al-Haisa pointed out that Jordan has a major problem of water scarcity, as it is considered the third poorest country in the world in terms of water, while the presence of refugees exacerbated this problem, calling on the international community to shoulder its responsibilities in this regard and increase support for countries hosting refugees.
For his part, Chairman of the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee, Khaldoun Haya, affirmed the depth of partnership and cooperation between Jordan and the European Union, appreciating the European Union’s role in enhancing security and stability in the region.
He said that Jordan, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II, plays a pivotal role in the region and the Middle East, adding that Jordan’s foreign policy is balanced and characterized by wisdom in dealing with all regional and international issues.
He pointed out that there are permanent periodic meetings between the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate Affairs to review the latest developments in the region and the world and unify parliamentary and governmental efforts to serve the higher national interests.
He also referred to the package of political reforms that Jordan implemented and the steps it took to strengthen its political, administrative and economic system, calling on the European Union to support Jordan so that it can continue its democratic path.
In turn, the Commissioner-General of the European Union for neighboring countries appreciated the pivotal role that Jordan plays towards the Syrian refugees and the Palestinian camps and the burdens it bears in this regard, until it has become a model in hosting refugees.
Bastach affirmed keenness to continue supporting Jordan and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to enable it to continue providing its vital services to refugees.
The parliamentary delegation includes, in addition to Al-Haisa and Haya, the head of the Parliamentary Women and Family Affairs Committee, Mayada Shreim, and the deputies: Jaafar Al-Rababaa, Eid Al-Naimat, Abdullah Abu Zaid and Shadi Freij.
