The Independent Election Commission affirmed that the parties’ law in force does not allow it to interfere with partisan positions and ways of expressing them, and that its constitutional and legal responsibilities with regard to partisan work is to “consider applications for establishing parties and follow up on their affairs in accordance with the provisions of the law” as stated in Article (67) of the constitution, paragraph ( 2/b).
The authority said in a statement today, Thursday, that the party law in force enabled it to refer any violation committed by the party to the relevant authorities.
The Commission stressed, through its spokesperson, Muhammad Khair Al-Rawashdeh, that any internal party practices that violate the ethics of political work must be held accountable by the party itself in accordance with its basic and internal regulations, which must include conditions for punishing anyone who transgresses the party’s constants, values, and goals.
The Commission affirmed that it intervenes in accordance with the provisions of the Parties Law in the event of an explicit violation supported by documents and information and referring it to the concerned authorities, or in the event that the party itself submits an official complaint in accordance with the rules, so that the Commission becomes a neutral party in following up the content of the complaint and referring it to the competent investigative authorities.
Al-Rawashdeh explained that the Commission did not receive any official complaint regarding what was reported by the media about “a licensed party giving journalists money for the purposes of promoting the party’s ideas or not to disturb it, in a way that guarantees a wider spread of the party.”
He stressed that such news requires an internal move by the party to investigate the matter and inform the public about the results.
The Commission reaffirmed that one of its tasks is to review applications for establishing parties, follow up on their affairs, ensure that the parties adhere to the application of the constitution and the law, and investigate any violations, in the context of strengthening the independence of the work of the parties in a way that enables them to carry out their duties in accordance with the provisions of the laws in force.
She pointed out that the opportunity today allows for a new birth for serious and responsible pluralistic party work that enjoys the confidence of public opinion and seeks to attract affiliates and supporters of ideas or programs that serve the public interest, which places a moral and political responsibility on the parties, whether they have reconciled their conditions, were newly established, or merged with each other.
The commission called for quickly clarifying the truth about the validity of what was circulated by the media and placing public opinion in its image through the party’s internal committees or the competent oversight authorities, stressing that this would rebuild confidence between the parties and the public opinion audience, otherwise the truth will remain absent in front of the circulation of news from without denial or confirmation.
