Hospitality and welcome are two characteristics that characterize the Egyptian people, whether with those close to them or even strangers, in addition to being benevolent all the time and endless giving, which made them accept some gifts, even if they were few, with love, as if they owned the world in their hands, as they said in the proverbs, “The lover’s onion is a sheep.” Dr. Khaled Abu Al-Lail, Professor of Folklore at the Faculty of Arts, Cairo University, explained that many popular proverbs are not based on a realistic story, but rather came as a result of a situation that was circulated by generations to document a benign value and beautiful morals that we are proud of.

Onion loving lamb

And the professor of folklore continued on this proverb, saying that the Egyptians from time immemorial appreciated the guest and tried with all their might to please him, which made this guest consider this generosity excessive, even if he was presented with just a stallion of onions, and he added about the metaphor in onions and sheep that our ancient Egyptians trusted them over each other. The walls in offering offerings in the temples, some of them were rich and provided with sheep and sacrifices, and some of them were unable to do so and offered onions and vegetables, in both cases offering vows to the gods in their belief at that time that it is acceptable no matter how little and no matter how little it is, let alone offering everything we can To honor the guest and raise him up, even with the least we cost, but it is all we have.

And he added that the circulation of this proverb indicates that love is what makes the least valuable of things, and that the value of a person lies in his heart, feelings and respect for others, and not in what he gives and presents financially.
