The father and mother quickly dug up handfuls of sand, to prevent it from blocking the teenager’s mouth while he was screaming for help, they helped him not to suffocate, while 999 workers rushed to the scene of the accident at Anderby Creek, near Skegness, in Lincolnshire, according to the British Daily Mail. .
The hole collapsed under the boy’s feet
Rescuers said a 14-year-old boy was standing in the hole when it collapsed under his feet last Saturday, and they said if he had been lying down, the accident could have ended in tragedy.
It took rescue teams from the Coast Guard and firefighters more than an hour to get him out due to fears that the sand had collapsed completely.
“What happens when you dig up the sand, there is a high probability of it collapsing again,” said Fran Wilkins, the Coast Guard’s chief coastal operations officer. “The priority is to make sure at all times that the boy’s airway is protected and that his head stays up so he can breathe.”
And she continued, “It took a lot of people in a coordinated effort to remove the sand in such a way that we could get him out of the hole as quickly and safely as possible, and fortunately the boy remained calm the whole time which certainly helped reduce panic and allowed everyone to get to work and do his job.” Rescue on his parents to keep the sand out of his mouth and call for help.
She continued, “There’s that instinct to keep trying to dig, but the more you dig and weaken that sand that collapses, the more likely you’ll create a much bigger hole. They kept his head clean and his mouth and nose clear so he could breathe and waited for more help which is really important to him.”
And she warned beachgoers to consider the size of the hole and its location, bearing in mind that “the greater its size, the greater the chances of its collapse.”
