The Ramadan cannon was fired in the capital, Amman, to mark the end of the fasting time with the sunset of the first day of Ramadan, reviving a historical culture and joy of faith.
Today, Thursday, the cannon installed in Al-Nakhil Square, in the downtown area of the capital, Amman, was fired to announce the start of Iftar time.
The use of the breakfast cannon dates back to the establishment of the Emirate of Transjordan in the 1920s, then it spread to the cities of Amman, Irbid, Ajloun and Karak, but it stopped for decades before returning in 2019.
Documents related to the Ramadan cannon in Jordan are few, and the oldest dates back to October 1938 in the Department of the National Library.
This document refers to the address of the Mayor of Amman, the then Prime Minister, Tawfiq Abu Al-Huda, under the title “Ramadan Cannon Shots,” in which he asked him to issue orders to the Army Commander to supply the Amman Municipality’s cannon with worn-out clothes for use in the cannon filling process.
Since 2019, the Greater Amman Municipality has decided to launch the Ramadan cannon from “Al-Nakhil Square” throughout the holy month, in cooperation with the Jordanian army, to revive this heritage and evoke the memory of the city.
The Ramadan cannon uses a method to announce the time of breaking the fast to the public, which is a tradition followed in many Islamic countries, where the country’s army fires a sound artillery shell at sunset, announcing the end of the fast.
Historical studies indicate that the Egyptian capital, Cairo, was the first city in which the Ramadan cannon fired in 865 AH, during the time of the Mamluk Sultan Khashkadam.
