Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate Affairs Ayman Safadi said that the Aqaba meeting, which brought together Palestinian and Israeli political and security officials in the presence of a Jordanian, American and Egyptian, is the first political engagement of its kind in years, and affirmed a Palestinian-Israeli commitment to respect all previous agreements and work to reduce escalation. The parties participating in the conference also emphasized “the importance of preserving the historical status quo in the holy places in Jerusalem in word and deed without change, and stressed in this regard the Hashemite tutelage / the Jordanian role.”
Al-Safadi said that what was achieved in Aqaba is an important political step on a long and difficult road. To stop the deterioration and progress towards a just and lasting peace based on the two-state solution, and the implementation on the ground is what will determine the outcome of the situation.
He stressed that stopping unilateral steps that undermine the two-state solution and provocative measures that push towards tension and violence are necessary to end the deterioration and reduce escalation.
And he stressed that the Kingdom will continue to make every possible effort to stop the deterioration, and to find a real political horizon that activates the peace process, and achieves progress in resolving the conflict on the basis of the two-state solution, which embodies the independent and sovereign Palestinian state with occupied Jerusalem as its capital on the lines of June 4, 1967, to live in peace and security alongside one another. Israel.
Al-Safadi thanked the brotherly Arab Republic of Egypt for the great efforts it made before and during the Aqaba meeting, pointing to the depth and institutional coordination between the two brotherly countries.
Safadi also appreciated the important role played by the United States and its active and influential participation in the meeting, stressing the centrality of the American leadership role in all peace efforts.
Al-Safadi stressed the importance of the American efforts, and the positions taken by the Biden administration regarding the need to stop all unilateral measures, and work to achieve peace on the basis of the two-state solution.
