Jordanians complained about a significant increase in the electricity bill last January, at a time when the government confirmed that it did not raise electricity prices this year, and that it continues to provide subsidies to the least consuming groups according to the tariff that was applied since last April.
The government attributed the increase in the value of electricity bills during the past month to the increase in citizens’ consumption in the winter period, their use of electric heaters, and the operation of water heaters for a long time, which leads to an increase in electricity withdrawals, and its impact on the monthly bills.
The spokeswoman for the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Authority, Tahrir al-Qaq, said that electricity prices have not been raised completely, and the last amendment to the electric tariff was in April of last year, according to which citizens were included in the subsidy, especially groups that consume less than 50 dinars. monthly, noting that the Energy Authority falls within its responsibilities for setting prices, and no decision has been taken on it this year.
Al-Qaq added in a statement to Al-Araby Al-Jadeed that the increase in the value of electricity bills last month is due to the increase in consumption, as some people use electric heaters for long hours, which do not save energy, which leads to an increase in the electricity bill, noting that This situation occurs annually during the winter period, and there is no truth to the rumors that the government has raised electricity prices. An Arab economy
She pointed out that the majority of household subscriptions to electricity are included in the subsidy and within the specified tariff prices, while additional support is being provided to segments with lower consumption and specified at less than 50 dinars per month.
The Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Authority, Ziyad Al-Saaida, said in a press statement that about one million and 503 thousand electricity meters were registered on the website, to benefit from the subsidized tariff in the domestic sector, out of the total household sector meters amounting to one million and 940 thousand.
He added that more than 90 percent of the household electricity bills included in the subsidy did not increase compared to the old tariff, while some witnessed a limited decrease in varying proportions.
He pointed out that the website will continue to receive registration requests to benefit from the subsidized electric tariff, and will not be closed to allow subscribers to make any amendments to their registration data, such as changing the meter required to be included in the subsidy, as a result of changing the place of residence, and allowing the way to register anyone who deserves to benefit from the subsidy. The subsidized tariff, and registering the meters of Jordanians who are outside the Kingdom, after their return in the future.
In the context of controlling the use of electricity, and collecting the rights of electricity companies due monthly, an official in one of the companies said that smart meters have been installed, so that the electric current and the lines connected to subscribers are controlled remotely, including disconnecting the current if the electricity bills have accumulated for several months, and the subscriber does not comply By paying them regularly, after this was not possible in the past, by manually disconnecting the electricity.
