Launching a Jordanian observatory to monitor hate speech and misinformation

Government Communication Minister Faisal Al-Shboul said, on Sunday, that the great development in modern communication and communication means “gave mankind an unprecedented opportunity not only to communicate among people, but also to express themselves in accordance with the policies of international media companies without being subject to media laws and charters.”

During his sponsorship of the National Conference on “Hate Speech and Misinformation, Its Impact and Mechanisms for Reducing It,” organized by the Hayat Center-Rased, he praised Rased’s initiative to launch an observatory whose mission is to monitor hate speech, misinformation, and rumors in Jordan through social media, “as a first step that includes Arab countries.” later”.

He said that “more than 81 million dinars were acquired by social media from advertisements in the local market last year.”

He added, “The Council of Arab Ministers of Justice began last year to discuss a guiding Arab draft law to prevent hate speech, and now we have a proposed Arab definition of hate speech.”

Al-Shaboul said that “defamation, defamation and contempt crimes rank first in complaints and lawsuits submitted to the competent authorities in Jordan, and represent nearly two-thirds of crimes committed through social media, followed by threats and cases of indecency and fraud.”

He pointed out that “the attack on privacy and the targeting of children, women, and the most vulnerable groups in societies cause far-reaching effects and immediate dangers, especially in conservative societies such as Arab societies.”

“It is our duty to all strengthen the role of the media in confronting hate speech and misinformation, and this is within the administrative organization of the Ministry of Government Communication, and we will intensify efforts with all relevant partners in this framework,” according to Al-Shboul.

He added that the media is mainly called upon to consolidate its efforts to combat hate speech and to maximize journalistic professional bases. This helps social media to adhere to these rules and follow the same professional path.
