The Muslim Brotherhood condemned the burning of a copy of the Holy Qur’an by the leader of a far-right party in Sweden, with official approval from the government.
In a statement issued by the group, the group expressed its refusal to consider the crime as part of freedom of opinion and expression.
She said that burning the Qur’an is a hostile act against all Muslims that incites hatred and pushes for divisive ideological discourses, because it paves the way for conflicts, tensions and violence and threatens peace and social cohesion.
The group called on the international community to shoulder its responsibilities to reject hatred, discrimination, incitement and violence, stressing that rejecting extremism, fanaticism and incitement to hatred is a collective responsibility that everyone must abide by.
The following is the text of the statement:
The Muslim Brotherhood strongly condemns the burning of a copy of the Holy Qur’an by the leader of a far-right party in Sweden, with the official approval of the government and under the protection of the Swedish police. It also denounces considering this within the framework of freedom of expression.
The Holy Quran is the sacred book of Muslims, like the Bible to Christians and the Torah to Jews. It is condemned by more than a billion Muslims, and the group considers the burning of the Qur’an an act of hostility against all Muslims that incites hatred and pushes for divisive ideological discourses, because it paves the way for conflicts, tensions and violence and threatens peace and social cohesion. It is known that discrimination based on religion and incitement to hatred are among the crimes stipulated in the Universal Charter on Human Rights and international laws.
The group calls on the international community to shoulder its responsibilities to reject hatred, discrimination, incitement and violence, stressing that rejecting extremism, fanaticism and incitement to hatred is a collective responsibility that everyone must abide by. It also calls on Muslims to be angry at their sanctities and to punish those who transgress them through peaceful and legitimate means, and also calls on non-Muslims to get acquainted with the Noble Qur’an, the revealed book of God.
The group calls on Muslim rulers to intervene with the rulers of the West to stop these provocations, and to protect the feelings and rights of Muslims in the East and West.
“And God is supreme in His affairs, but most people do not know.” (Yusuf: From verse 21)
