The Director General of the Jordan Food and Drug Administration, Nizar Muhaidat, said on Thursday that there is no real shortage of medicine in Jordan, noting that the existing stock is sufficient for at least 6 months.

Muhaidat added, in his interview with the “Voice of the Kingdom” program, that there is a specialized department in the institution that monitors the stock of medicine, and before it runs out, the appropriate action is taken.

Muhaidat continued that there is no shortage of medicine, but sometimes there is poor distribution of medicine.

“Two weeks ago, there was a shortage of Panadol Science as a result of moving the manufacturing site to the factory, and the matter was addressed and the stock was strengthened (…) The interruption, as I said at the beginning, if it happened, is temporary (…) Sometimes a global shortage occurs in the active substance of the drug, and this results in an increase in demand in light of the limited quantity,” according to calmers.

Muhaidat added that Jordan is devoid of counterfeit medicine, and no cases have been recorded in this regard, which is an indication that medicine in Jordan is reliable.

Regarding medicine prices, Muhaidat said that there are principles followed in this regard, pointing to a reduction in the prices of 1,200 various medicinal products in 2022.

And that the reconsideration of drug prices is an ongoing and non-stop program.

Regarding the profit margin on medicine, Muhaidat said that the profit rate of the pharmacy is 19%, which is approximately the value of the drug store.

He explained that infant formula in the third stage (for an age older than a year) is not priced by the institution, but is subject to the supervision of one of the directorates in the Ministry of Industry and Trade to set price ceilings.
