“Communications” sets the date for launching the fifth generation services in Jordan

The Deputy Chairman of the Board of Commissioners at the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, Nael Al-Adwan, said on Tuesday that the launch date for fifth generation services in Jordan will be in the first quarter of 2024.

According to the fifth generation agreement signed last year with the three telecommunications companies operating in the local market, each licensee is committed to launching fifth generation services commercially within a period not exceeding 18 months from the date of its license.

In September 2022, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority signed an agreement with the Jordanian company for mobile phone services “Zain”, in preparation for the introduction of fifth generation services to Jordan, after it signed last August the same agreement with (Orange) and ( a wish).

According to a previous press release issued by the authority, the agreement grants the licensees who signed the fifth generation frequencies licenses, so that each licensee is committed to launching fifth generation services commercially within a period not exceeding 18 months from the date of its license.

The agreement obliges each licensee to cover the main areas in the Kingdom with fifth generation services, especially city centers and industrial and commercial areas, within a period of 3 years from the date of licensing fifth generation services.

Each licensee is obligated to provide fifth generation services and make them available to at least 50% of the Kingdom’s population within a period not exceeding 4 years from the date of the license, and to increase the percentage of this coverage by the equivalent of 5% for each year until reaching a percentage of not less than 75% of the population. Residents of the Kingdom, noting that the government, represented by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, will receive a 10% share of the revenues from the fifth generation services and applications provided by the licensed companies.

The incentive packages granted to companies included the placement of exemption from sales tax and customs fees on infrastructure components, devices and equipment for fifth-generation service networks, granting technology neutrality to each licensee in conjunction with the license for fifth-generation services, and granting the license applicant a one-time discount of 50% on acquisition revenues. License for additional frequencies that are approved for licensing in the future within the frequency bands currently licensed to licensees.

In addition to extending the valid licenses in accordance with the “Cabinet’s decision” for an additional period of (10) ten years and for one time, after implementing the obligations stipulated in the agreement. For an additional period of (5) five years and for one time only, in addition to ensuring an increasing, recurring and sustainable annual government revenue increase from telecommunications services for each licensee during the years 2022, 2023 and 2024, otherwise the extension is not granted.

With regard to the percentage of participation returns that result from the activities and services of the second, third and fourth generation, it will be modified according to the decision of the Council of Ministers to become (6%) instead of (10%) as of 1/1/2021, with regard to “effective licenses”, while the percentage of returns will be Participation from providing all “fifth generation services” and/or any services associated with “fifth generation services”, complementary to them, or derived from them by (10%).
