Despite the advance preparations and the momentum of commercials for the “White Friday” discounts in Jordan, they were not at the desired level for the merchant and the consumer as well.

Activists on social media sarcastically expressed what they described as imaginary discounts and discounts on poor quality products.

For its part, the National Consumer Protection Association said it had received hundreds of complaints about fake offers on prices during White Friday.

Hussein Al-Amoush, the association’s media advisor, said that the prices before and after the sales remained the same for some commodities.

He pointed out that the Jordanian consumer is one of the most aware of consumption issues, according to studies.

Al-Amoush explained in an article he published today, Sunday, that the fundamental difference between our (white) group and their (black) group is that the discounts on goods there are completely realistic discounts, accompanied in many countries by strict control by various governmental and private agencies represented by federations and associations concerned with the consumer.

He added, “In this context, some merchants understand White Friday as a tool for marketing the commodity at the old price, provided that it announces on the storefront or on its website that it has made discounts at specific percentages on this or that commodity, and in fact it announces the old price, but it sums it up as a price reduction.” to increase its sales.

Improved commercial traffic in limited places

For his part, the representative of the clothing and textile sector in the Jordan Chamber of Commerce, Asaad Al-Qawasmi, said, on Saturday, that White Friday witnessed a good commercial movement, but it was in limited places and concentrated in malls and large shops.

He added that the commercial movement in the capital, Amman, was greater than in other governorates, due to the presence of large shops that are able to provide sales in the largest manner.

Al-Qawasmi stressed that the traditional markets were almost empty of customers because there were no discounts, as they are witnessing the beginning of the season and aim for profit, and they are not bound by discounts.

He concluded by saying: “The material benefit of large and international companies is greater than that of other small companies, because they do not have the capabilities to provide greater discounts.”

Reasons for low turnout

One of the main reasons for the decline in commercial activity in the markets is the weak purchasing power of the consumer, the launch of the World Cup in Qatar, and the attraction of foreign e-commerce websites and applications a large volume of purchasing movement as a result of their large discounts, which created unfair competition in the markets, according to some merchants.
