King stresses the need to preserve the historical and legal status of the Holy City

King Abdullah II held in London today, Friday, a meeting with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, on the strategic relations between the two countries, and regional and international developments.

The King wished Sunak success in his duties as Prime Minister of his country, stressing Jordan’s keenness to build on the distinguished friendship that brings it together with Britain, and to enhance cooperation between them at the political, economic and defense levels.

During the meeting, which was attended by HRH Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad, the King’s chief advisor for religious and cultural affairs and the King’s personal envoy, His Majesty expressed his appreciation for Britain’s economic and development support to Jordan.

He stressed the need to continue close coordination between the two countries on issues of common interest, in a way that achieves their interests, serves the issues of the region, and enhances global peace and security.

The King stressed the importance of working to mitigate the effects of the crisis in Ukraine, especially in the areas of food and energy, which require a collective effort and more solidarity among countries.

On the Palestinian issue, the King reiterated the importance of working effectively to achieve a just and comprehensive peace between Palestinians and Israelis on the basis of the two-state solution, which guarantees the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The King stressed the need to preserve the historical and legal situation in the Holy City, and to prevent unilateral Israeli measures that would aggravate the situation in the Palestinian territories.

He pointed out that Jordan will continue to make all efforts to protect and care for the Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, based on the Hashemite guardianship over them.

With regard to the refugee issue, the King noted the importance of continued support for refugees through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees “UNRWA”.

The meeting touched on regional and international efforts in the war on terrorism, within a holistic approach.

In turn, the British Prime Minister stressed the depth of relations between the two countries and their keenness to consolidate them, praising Jordan’s pivotal role, under the leadership of His Majesty, in the Middle East.

Sunak stressed the importance of continuing bilateral cooperation to achieve economic progress and prosperity, pointing out that Jordan is one of the United Kingdom’s most important allies in the region.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, Director of the King’s Office, Dr. Jaafar Hassan, Jordanian Ambassador to Britain Manar Al-Dabbas, and a number of British officials.
