Jordan and America sign a new memorandum of understanding for strategic partnership

Jordan and the United States of America will sign, on Friday, in Washington, a memorandum of understanding on the strategic partnership between the two countries’ governments, framing the support provided to the Kingdom.
The signing ceremony of the memorandum of understanding, on Friday, will be preceded by bilateral talks between Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate Affairs Ayman Safadi and his US counterpart Anthony Blinken at 6 pm Amman time, followed by a joint press conference.
The memorandum of understanding includes the United States providing about $10.15 billion over the next 7 years to the kingdom, according to the US State Department.
The joint statement issued after His Majesty King Abdullah II met with US President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the Jeddah summit in July about the US intention to sign a new memorandum of understanding with Jordan, through which the US intends to provide annual aid to Jordan of at least $1.45 billion annually during The period between 2023 and 2029.
The new memorandum is the largest in terms of the volume of aid provided to Jordan, and the longest in terms of time, and is based on more than 7 decades of strategic partnership between the two countries.
The memorandum of understanding reflects the political commitment of the United States to support Jordan, its stability and the strength of the partnership between the two countries, and aims to meet Jordan’s needs and support the economic reform program announced by His Majesty King Abdullah II.
President Biden reaffirmed the United States’ absolute support for Jordan as a key ally of the United States and a force for peace in the region, and for the leadership of King Abdullah II.
The memorandum of understanding that will be signed next Friday is the fourth memorandum of understanding on the strategic partnership between the two countries. The first memorandum was signed in 2008 and included aid worth $660 million annually for a period of 5 years starting from 2010.
The second memorandum of understanding was signed in 2015 at a value of $1 billion annually for a period of 3 years.
And he signed the third memorandum of understanding in 2018, worth $1.275 billion annually for a period of 5 years. The memorandum to be signed on Friday will replace the current memorandum of understanding, which expires in September 2022.
