Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, warned today of the remarkable decline in international support for refugees in the region and for partner UN institutions in efforts to meet their needs.

During his meeting with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, Safadi stressed the need for joint action to ensure the necessary support to provide a decent life for refugees and to help host countries bear the consequences of the burden of asylum.

Al-Safadi praised the strong partnership through which Jordan and the High Commissioner for Refugees are working to provide the necessary services to about one million and three hundred thousand Syrian brothers living in Jordan, only 10% of whom are in refugee camps. He stressed the importance of the role played by the UNHCR in supporting refugees and keeping their cause on the international agenda.

Safadi and Grandi agreed to intensify joint efforts to mobilize international support for refugees.

Grandi praised the great humanitarian role played by the Kingdom in hosting Syrian refugees and providing the care and health and educational services they need.
