Professor Takefumi, of Azabu University in Japan, was inspired by this observation and went on to discover that dogs had more tears in their eyes than usual when reunited with their owners..

The researchers noted that dogs’ tears are caused by an increase in oxytocin, the “love hormone”, which evokes feelings of love and affection in dogs when they see their owners and fill their eyes with tears.
