The Compass – Commissioner for Tourism and Environment at the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, Dr. Nidal Al-Majali, said that work has been going on for seven days to contain the spilled oil in the Aqaba Sea.
In a statement on Tuesday, Al-Majali indicated that some spread of oil splatters continued to appear as a result of the change in the direction and speed of the wind, causing pollution in some beaches, resulting from the accumulation of most of the spilled material under the berth of the container port.
Al-Majali called on marine activities operators and beachgoers to take precautions and stay away from any areas that the oil reaches, and report to the Marine Reserve Department and Prince Hamzah Pollution Control Center to deal with them.
He pointed out that all observations on the beaches, some of which were monitored in part of the beaches of neighboring countries, continued during the period of sea conditioning and dealing with these oils, which specialists from the Marine Science Station advised not to deal with with dispersed chemicals to ensure that marine life was not harmed, according to Al-Majali.
He noted that the team of the Prince Hamzah Center for Pollution Control of the Aqaba Company for the Management and Operation of Ports and the concerned authorities are working with specialized technical equipment and qualified cadres to remove pollution from the sea.
For his part, the Director of the Marine Science Station, Dr. Ali Al-Sawalmeh, confirmed that the readings of 11 seawater sites showed the safety of coral in the first two days of the accident, and that there was no impact on the marine environment in the shores of Aqaba.
It is noteworthy that the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority referred the file of the polluting ship to the Aqaba Court Prosecutor for the legal requirement according to the Environmental Protection Regulation No. 21 of 2001 issued under Article 52 and 56 of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority Law, as an affected party.
