Today, Sunday, the Minister of Agriculture, Khaled Al-Hunaifat, confirmed that the ministry has not made any amendments to prevent the use or import of sludge for agricultural purposes, and that it is still following up and monitoring through its departments all uses of fertilizers and pesticides in order to preserve the quality of the local product.
This came during his meeting with the Syndicate of Agricultural Engineers Ali Abu Nutta, the Syndicate of Traders and Producers of Agricultural Materials Muhammad Baibars, the President of the Jordanian Dates Association Eng. Anwar Haddad, and the Director General of the Farmers Union Mahmoud Al-Oran.
Al-Hanaifat pointed out that despite the follow-up of a number of international studies on the use of treated water in agriculture, the ministry still, through regulating instructions and permanent and continuous control, prevents its use in agriculture in order to preserve the health of the citizen and the reputation of the local product, stressing the continuation of this approach.
For their part, the attendees valued the commitment of the Ministry of Agriculture to the instructions and the continuation of maintaining the quality and safety of the local product, and the sustainability of cooperation and participatory decision-making related to the agricultural sector and exports.
It is noteworthy that sludge is a waste resulting from the treatment and purification of water, whether in drinking water or sewage water. It results from water treatment processes, and its characteristics, composition and name vary depending on the type and stage of treatment that caused its production.
