The Assistant Secretary-General for Media and Communication Affairs and spokesperson for the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, Omar Salama, said that the current storage of dams is less than 19%.

Speaking to Jordan TV today, Thursday, Salameh pointed to the modest water reserves in water sources, especially in dams, during the past two years, indicating that groundwater is also suffering from depletion.

Groundwater Exploitation Instructions

He referred to the instructions for the exploitation of groundwater aimed at providing additional water sources for farmers and supporting them, stressing the ministry’s efforts to relieve farmers and provide them with possible facilities.

“Through this procedure, the ministry decided to provide water to farmers on concessional terms and different from the conditions applied to industrial and production wells,” according to Salameh.

He noted that a ceiling is not required to extract water, especially in the Jordan Valley, and that a depth of no more than 150 meters is required, and that the well is allocated to 60 agricultural units, and it is possible for farmers to participate in digging one well.

He pointed to a bank guarantee provided by the farmer in the amount of 10,000 dinars, proving his financial solvency to abide by the conditions and adhere to the application of instructions and for fear of any violations, speaking of non-refundable license fees of 1,750 dinars.

He talked about farmers’ desire to dig wells, as more than 150 wells were licensed in the Jordan Valley, to meet their agricultural needs and empower them economically.
