The Compass – The representative of the clothing sector in the Jordan Chamber of Commerce, Asaad Al-Qawasmi, said on Tuesday that despite the increase in the import of clothes this year by 35%, there is little movement on it due to the weak purchasing power.
Al-Qawasmi explained that imports during the first half of 2022 amounted to 150 million dinars, compared to 110 million dinars in 2021.
He pointed out that the movement on party and wedding clothes in the current year was weaker than the movement in the previous year, but it is better than the year 2020, which was witnessing the spread of the Corona virus.
He added that the prices of clothes, shoes and bags are fixed in the markets despite the high freight rates and the high prices from the country of origin, due to the high competition due to the accumulation of goods and the reduction of customs tariffs.
Regarding the active movement in the markets, he said, “There is movement in the summer period in the markets, but it is not on clothes … there is movement on restaurants and entertainment venues.”
He reiterated that the weak purchasing movement during Eid al-Adha will affect the winter season, indicating that the accumulation of summer goods and losses incurred by merchants will reduce their liquidity to buy winter clothes.
He explained that the summer season in clothes ends in the month of September.
