The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees provided regular cash assistance to about 33,000 refugee families in Jordan during the month of June, including 3,000 non-Syrian families.
In a report, UNHCR spoke of 12,000 families on the waiting list to receive regular cash assistance, adding that these families are eligible for assistance, but are unable to receive regular monthly cash assistance due to limited funding.
UNHCR says it provides monthly cash assistance to families to meet the basic needs of many “vulnerable refugees who are unable to make ends meet”.
UNHCR spokesperson in Jordan, Mishaal Al-Fayez, told UNHCR:The kingdom“The Commission provides monthly cash assistance to the neediest families according to the funding available to the Commission.
UNHCR is aware of the need for many families for this type of assistance, but UNHCR prioritizes the “most vulnerable” due to limited funding, according to Al-Fayez.
Al-Fayez indicated that UNHCR was unable to include more families in the lists of beneficiaries of this aid.
The assistance includes refugees of different nationalities, and is based on an assessment during the home visit, and takes into account different criteria for eligibility for monthly cash assistance, such as the number of family members, the presence of disabilities, and other considerations, according to the UNHCR spokesperson in Jordan.
Regarding the value of the aid, Al-Fayez said: “There is no specific value for everyone, and the value of the monthly cash assistance varies from one family to another based on the number of family members and nationality.”
The Commission’s financial requirements amount to 408 million dollars for the current year, and it has obtained funding of 119 million dollars, or 29% of the financial requirements established, as of July 5.
Al-Fayez spoke toThe kingdom“, about the absence of any indications of a threat or danger to the programs provided through UNHCR and its partners, or to the devaluation of the services or humanitarian assistance provided by UNHCR to refugees in Jordan.
Al-Fayez said that there are donor agencies and countries that provide grants and funding at intervals during the year, or in later periods of the year.
“There are certain countries that pump the funding they promised us during periods from September to December 2022,” according to Al-Fayez, who indicated that the indicators indicate the commitment of countries and donors to complete the funding within months.
Urgent Aid
In June, UNHCR supported nearly 400 refugee families with urgent cash assistance, compared to support for nearly 170 families in May.
The UNHCR says that as of mid-July, there are 762,269 registered refugees, including 675,854 Syrian refugees.
82.6% of the refugees live outside the camps.
