A 39-year-old Swedish man spoke of the bitter experience of the disease when he contracted monkeypox, which the World Health Organization on Saturday classified as a global health emergency.

According to the British newspaper, The Guardian, Sebastian Cohen attended a gay celebration in late June, believing at the time that the recorded cases of the disease in the city were still limited.

Sebastian, who lives in New York City, said he works in the charitable field to support sexual and reproductive health, and this has made him follow the developments of monkeypox from the beginning.

Sebastian was keen to immunize himself, so he wanted to vaccinate against monkeypox, early on, but he was unable to book an appointment for the vaccination.

He explained that a week after attending the celebration, that is, at the beginning of this July, severe symptoms appeared, including fatigue, fever, joint pain, chills, and large swollen lymph nodes.

After that, the patient began to feel inflammation in some areas of the body along with itching, but he did not feel much concern at first, because he thought that the symptoms were moderate to him.

He added that he was reassured because he is still thirty-nine years old, and that he does not suffer from any chronic diseases, but this belief was wrong.

He explained that in late June, the capacity of the health sector in New York did not allow for more than ten examinations per day, which is a very limited number.

Sebastian conducted an examination against Corona, and the result was negative, and after that, he discovered monkeypox infection, which infected thousands in a number of countries in the world.

Cohen stated that he immediately entered the stage of treatment for monkeypox, as all symptoms of the disease appeared on him when he went to the hospital, and doctors prescribed him the drug “TPOXX”.

And keep taking three pills of this medicine within 12 hours, and the treatment is accompanied by a diet high in fat.

The patient explained that the worst stage of the disease began when the itching intensified and the blisters spread on his skin, and the rash spread to all parts of his body, except for his penis.

Cohen added that those blisters were swollen in the form of pimples and then later hardened, peeled, and then fell from the skin, while the pain was severe, with the body temperature rising to 39.4 degrees Celsius.

And he indicated that he felt better after about two weeks of illness, so he entered the bathroom without feeling pain, describing the experience as hell.

Cohen is still subjecting himself to isolation despite the disappearance of symptoms, saying: “He considers himself lucky because he lives in a comfortable apartment, can order food from outside and has amenities, while the situation of other patients may be difficult and does not allow sufficient care.”

Cohen acknowledged what he considered a failure, because he contracted the disease at the beginning of its outbreak, knowing that he is a person working in the health awareness sector and is supposed to be more immunized against the disease compared to ordinary people.
