Yesterday, two environmental activists who belonged to the “Just Stop Oil” movement, which calls for a halt to the construction of any new facility linked to fossil fuels, stuck their fingers in the frame of a Van Gogh painting in a museum in London.

Both the museum and the environmental movement said the activists had attached their fingers to the “Peach Trees in Blossom” painting, currently on display at the Courtauld Gallery, painted by Van Gogh in 1889 and representing a landscape in southern France.

“I apologize to everyone, we don’t want to do this, but we are attached to this painting, this beautiful painting, because we are terrified about our future,” activist Louis McKechney, 21, said in a video posted by the organization online.

McKinney was previously arrested 20 times and spent six weeks in prison last winter because he and others crossed the highway around London, and became famous especially when he interrupted a football match in March by tying himself to one of the goalposts.

In the video clip, in which he and his colleague appeared wearing the movement’s oil T-shirts and sticking their fingers on the frame of the painting, McKinney denounced “40 new government projects for fossil fuels,” according to the figure provided by environmental associations. Her signature is tantamount to “signing our death note,” he said.

The Courtauld Gallery, in connection with the “Agence France Presse”, explained that the hall in which the painting was displayed was “immediately closed to the public” after the activists attached themselves, and hoped to reopen it today.

And “Just Stop Oil” indicated that 5 of its activists were arrested Wednesday after a move they carried out in a museum in Glasgow (Scotland), where they painted inscriptions on the floor and wall and attached themselves to the frame of a nineteenth century painting representing a landscape in Scotland.
