Energy and Minerals concludes assessment of the “Nuclear Security” system

A specialized team of experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency has concluded the task of evaluating the nuclear security system and procedures for nuclear and radiological materials in Jordan at the request of the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission, the body responsible for regulating and controlling the nuclear and radiological sector in the Kingdom, which is the first country in the region to complete an assessment of like that.
Hussein Laboun, Chairman of the Commission’s Board of Commissioners, said that the goal of the 10-day mission was to help evaluate nuclear security measures for materials outside the regulatory control system in Jordan, and to take the necessary measures to prevent, detect and respond to illegal use of nuclear and radiological materials, including It is in line with international best practices and standards issued by the International Atomic Energy Agency to strengthen the supervisory and regulatory framework.
Dr. Laboun added that the scope of the Agency’s team of experts included several areas, most notably: assessing the legislative framework and regulatory and supervisory procedures related to nuclear security in Jordan, reviewing the roles and responsibilities assigned to the regulator, coordinating with all concerned parties, and measures and arrangements related to radiological and nuclear detection systems and equipment.
The mission included a visit to the Monitoring and Emergency Center and the national communication system for information related to all border gates to follow up the degree of response to nuclear security in Jordan. The delegation also held meetings with those concerned with controlling nuclear and radiological materials at land, sea and air border crossings (airports).
For his part, the team leader, the nuclear advisor at the Permanent Mission of France to the United Nations and international organizations in Vienna, Dr. Frederic Marriott, praised Jordan’s efforts in strengthening the nuclear security system and procedures in the Kingdom.
He said that Jordan, represented by the authority and its cadres, has made progress in strengthening the basic system of nuclear security to detect nuclear and other radioactive materials outside the scope of regulatory control and to prevent their entry into the Kingdom’s territory.
He expressed his happiness with the great achievement in the field of transparent cooperation and coordination with partners and raising awareness in the field of nuclear security. The team presented recommendations and suggestions to support Jordan in further strengthening and maintaining nuclear security.
The team of experts valued Jordan’s achievement of 16 best practices, most notably the establishment of the National Center for Nuclear and Radiological Security to achieve integration and coordination between the various concerned authorities at the national level in securing nuclear and radiological materials, combating their smuggling and dealing with what is seized of them, and reviewing and developing legislation related to nuclear and radiological security in the Kingdom. And the creation of a special software to sustain the work of radiological and nuclear control devices around the clock.
At the final meeting of the mission, which was held at the National Center for Nuclear and Radiological Security at the authority’s building, Dr. Laboun expressed his thanks to the International Atomic Energy Agency and the team of experts participating in this mission from France, Argentina, Malaysia, the United States of America and Japan, as well as the agency’s experts, in addition to members of the National Nuclear Security Committee and all Participants from the competent national institutions to support the regulatory role in the field of nuclear security in Jordan.
He stressed that the authority will continue to make efforts to achieve further development in the regulatory and supervisory procedures to follow up and improve its capabilities in the field of nuclear security.
