Breastfeeding is stressful especially in the early days when the baby sleeps irregularly and wakes up several times each night. A morning cup of coffee may give the mother a boost of activity, but does caffeine affect the baby? And how much caffeine is safe during breastfeeding?
Contrary to advice about caffeine during pregnancy, caffeine is unlikely to affect breast milk. The body breaks down most of the caffeine in coffee before it reaches breast milk or has a chance to affect the baby.

According to studies, only 1 percent of the caffeine ingested by a nursing mother reaches breast milk, which is not enough to harm the baby. But some children are affected more than others by a small amount of caffeine.
In general, if you take two or more cups a day, it is unlikely to harm the baby. But if the number of cups of coffee is a lot and exceeds moderation, there is harm that occurs, such as discomfort and nervousness.

Caffeine levels peak in breast milk after 1-2 hours, and you can monitor the effect of caffeine on a breastfed infant an hour after you have had coffee.

If you drink a lot of coffee while breastfeeding, you should consult your doctor about iron supplements, because the proportion of this mineral in breast milk is naturally low, and with caffeine intake it may decrease a lot.

decaffeinated coffee
There is no doubt that the amount of caffeine in this coffee is much less, but decaffeinated coffee is more acidic, and this affects the mother’s milk and thus the infant, so it is not the best option.

Other sources of caffeine
Coffee is not the only source of caffeine, it only contains a significant amount of it. If you are concerned about the effect of caffeine on your infant, you should look out for other sources, such as: energy drinks, black, green and white tea, cola drinks, chocolate and cocoa products.
