Malignant tumors are not the most dangerous diseases. There is the deadly amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which affects the motor neurons, and it is not known why and in what conditions a person develops it.
Dr. Alexey Vasiliev, a neurologist, says that the main problem that hinders the treatment and control of this mysterious disease is the lack of knowledge of its cause until now. According to one of the assumptions, it is a defect in the body at the genetic level, which leads to the development of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and the disease can be transmitted genetically. But experts have not been able to prove the validity of this assumption. All that is currently known are the symptoms that allow doctors to diagnose the disease.
He says, “There are factors by which we can predict the course of the disease. This disease usually affects people aged 45-60 years, but there are those who develop the disease in their 20s. Young patients live longer than people who develop the disease at the age of 60-70 years. The form of the disease is also of great importance.Sometimes the disease begins in the lower back and then moves to the legs, which leads to a defect in the patient’s gait. After that, the disease “rises” to include the hands and respiratory muscles.Statistics indicate that these patients live for a long time.Sometimes At some point, the disease can stop spontaneously for unknown reasons. It is true that these are rare cases, but they are recorded.”
He adds, muscle weakness, atrophy and tremors are signs that nerve cells in the brain are dying. Of course, the patient feels discomfort and pain. However, it is not directly related to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, but rather due to spasms, muscle tension or pressure in the skin. One of the symptoms in the initial stage, it may begin with muscle contraction under the skin in one muscle group, and then spread to other groups. Sometimes the victim laughs involuntarily or has severe negative feelings such as anxiety and anger.
The painful issue is that this disease is not treatable. All that the doctor can do after diagnosing the disease is to choose drugs that slow down the death of nerve cells, so that the patient can self-serve.
Vasiliev says, “It was previously believed that the patient should not know about his fatal disease. But this is not true. Because it is useful and important for the patient to know about his illness and what will happen to him in the future. Of course, all this should happen gradually and not suddenly.”
