In a new episode of the Russian-Western conflict raging on social media, a court in the Russian capital decided on Monday to ban the “Facebook” and “Instagram” applications owned by Meta, after accusing it of “extremism”.
According to the court’s decision, the ban imposed on “Meta” in Russia does not apply to the “WhatsApp” application.
According to prosecutors, the two platforms ignored requests to remove fake photos about the special operation of Russian forces in Ukraine, and also refused to remove invitations to unauthorized gatherings.
Russian prosecutors explained that “extremist information published on the two platforms threatens individuals and society as a whole,” noting that the owner company “violated its rules by allowing the publication of calls to kill members of the Russian army.”
In the opinion of observers and digital experts, the series of chapters of the war of social media platforms between Russia and the West is about social networks for fields of struggle, mutual rivalry and incitement, rather than being, as it is supposed, humanitarian and global platforms that cross ethnic, religious and sectarian differences.
Commenting on the Russian judicial decision, the digital expert, Amal Ahmed, said in an interview with Sky News Arabia, “The issuance of a Russian judicial decision to ban Facebook and Instagram means that the battle is getting more intense between Moscow and Western capitals in the virtual space as well, and not only in the real, and this is in any case an indication Negative causes a rupture between the peoples concerned in the global social media platforms, which are supposed to be bridges of encounter and acquaintance between people around the world.
But with this Ukrainian crisis, the digital expert adds, “We are faced with a bitter reality, which is that platforms and social networks are unfortunately employed in the war effort of the countries that own and finance them or whose nationalities are the owners of these platforms, unlike all the slogans raised about neutrality and professionalism, rejecting racism and preventing calls for violence. Party and hate.
To counter Facebook, the name of the Russian social networking platform Vkontakte, which can be used for free, is almost similar to Facebook, and is considered one of the most popular sites in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan.
Russia is facing the war of communication platforms with its platform “VKontakte”, which achieved the highest rate of use inside Russia in 2021, according to the international consumer statistics site “Statista”, as it acquired 73 percent of users of social media platforms in the country.
