A new study published in The International has found that people who frequently post their photos or videos double their chances of developing depression.

Social media use, self-representation habits, and mental health status were assessed using a three-part online survey. The data was collected between April 22, 2020 and April 4, 2021, when restrictive measures were in effect in Hungary.

According to the findings, the time spent on social media and the desire to share representative content increased during the pandemic waves. In addition, it has been associated with a higher and increased risk of major depressive disorder among more active users.

Alexandra Valeria Chandor, a communications and media expert, said the findings “have already shown that social media use and willingness to post representative images and videos have increased significantly compared to the pre-pandemic period.”

“During the third wave, depressive symptoms were reported by 45% of the sample compared to 27% of the total,” she added.

Interestingly, the desire to share representative content halved between the first two waves and then increased again. Respondents often shared selfies. But photos and videos taken on trips (portraying themselves or loved ones, including pets) have also been circulating.
