Following a routine of brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and having regular check-ups with your dentist can help keep your teeth healthy.
However, there are some foods that can damage the teeth and cause cavities.
The NHS explains: “Diet, smoking and drinking alcohol also have an impact on dental health.”
Dr. Khaled Kassem, chief orthodontist at Impress, says citrus can damage teeth. He explained: “Oranges, lemons and grapefruit are all delicious as fruits and juices and are known for their vitamin C. Just be sure to watch the amount you consume, however, as they are very acidic and can erode the enamel, making teeth more susceptible to cavities over time.”
Other foods can also have negative effects. It is known that limiting the amount of sugar you eat and drink is important to prevent tooth decay.
The NHS warns that a lot of the sugars we eat and drink are in foods and drinks such as soft drinks, fruit juice, jam and dried fruit.
“Saccharides are naturally found in foods such as fruit and milk, but we do not need to reduce these types of sugars,” the agency says.
But when the fruit is juiced or blended, as in smoothies, the sugars are released from the structure of the fruit.
And the authority continues: “Once these sugars are secreted, they can damage the teeth, so it is best to drink fruit juice or juices at meal times.”
Moreover, there are foods that can stain (discolor) teeth. The National Health Service says wine, cigarette smoke, tea and coffee all cause discoloration.
The authority explains: “The dentist or hygienist can give the teeth a professional cleaning, which may help reduce discoloration.”
The American Dental Association (ADA) notes: “Your mouth, teeth, and gums are more than just tools for eating. They are essential for chewing and swallowing—the first steps in digestion. Your mouth is your body’s primary point of contact with the nutrients you’re consuming. So what you put in your mouth doesn’t It affects not only your general health, but also the health of your teeth and gums. In fact, if you have poor nutrition, the first signs often appear in your mouth.”
For dental health, the association recommends limiting eating and drinking between meals.
“Unfortunately, most people choose foods like sweets and chips for snacks, and foods that harm teeth by promoting tooth decay,” she says. “And if you snack, make it a nutritious choice, like cheese, yogurt, fruits, vegetables, or nuts, for your overall health.” and the health of your teeth.
Fortunately, there are also foods that can help promote dental health. Dr. Khaled Qassem explained: “Blueberries contain a very low percentage of sugar and are known for their antioxidant properties, which helps prevent gums from suffering from diseases such as gingivitis or periodontitis.”
“Chocolate, a favorite among snack foods, actually helps fight tooth decay because its beans contain powerful anti-bacterial agents. This doesn’t mean you should eat chocolate in excess, but a small amount is enough to prevent cavities,” he added.
