A study, the results of which were published by the British government, showed that the rates of corona infection among the elderly in the country increased and remained at a high level, despite a significant decrease from the peak in January.
The React Covid-19 app, which examined nearly 95,000 home swab test results conducted in February, showed that about 1 in 35 people in England contracted the virus during this period and that infections were increasing among individuals aged 55 or older.
The researchers said, “The increase may be due to social contact since all Corona restrictions were lifted in late February, in addition to the decline in protection from the booster vaccine.”
UK Health Security Agency chief Jenny Harris said: “The data has shown that the pandemic is far from over and we can expect to see Covid spreading at high levels.”
“There is a slight increase in hospital admissions and infections, especially in the older group, but we don’t know where it is heading,” said Paul Elliott, the study’s director.
“We really need to monitor infection data very closely with surveys, like React, and we need to monitor hospital admissions,” he added.
Official figures showed that more than 346,000 people tested positive for the virus during the past seven days, an increase of 46 percent over the previous week.
According to the study, nearly half of the positive cases were a sub variant of the omicron, which the researchers say is more infectious.
