Cardiovascular, vascular catheter and network specialist Dr. Amr Saeed Rashid talked about cyanosis of the lips and hands and its indications.

Rashid said that some people notice blueness in the hands or the lips, “and we get a lot of questions about the causes of this phenomenon.”

He explained that the presence of cyanosis in the fingers of the hands or the palms has causes; Either it is from arterial ischemia or as a result of severe blood oxygen deficiency, in the case of arterial ischemia, the cyanosis is accompanied by severe pain in the affected palm and coldness, and usually one hand is injured, and this color changes to pale, then to red with the return of perfusion full.

Rashid indicated that “often these causes result from a situation of severe tension in the arm artery, a condition called Raynaud’s phenomenon.” But if it is caused by a lack of oxygen for reasons related to the heart or lung, the cyanosis appears continuously in both hands without pain or coldness in the palm.”

He added: “As for the cyanosis that occurs in the lips, it is most often the result of a lack of oxygen, as we mentioned, and very little that is due to lack of perfusion, as it happens in cases of exposure to severe cold.”

Rasheed explained, “It is often noticed that there is bluish lips in children, and the safety of the heart must be ensured as soon as they notice the blue lips. As for adults, the presence of cyanosis may be mainly due to lung diseases, or from the heart.”
