Hair loss is completely normal, as most of us lose between 50 and 100 hairs a day, which often happens without us noticing it.
However, when hair loss exceeds 100 hairs per day, this can become a concern. This becomes increasingly noticeable when hair growth slows down.
Fortunately, there are a number of natural remedies that have shown promise in stimulating hair growth. Vitamin E, for example, helps maintain healthy skin and eyes, strengthens the body’s natural defense against disease and infection, and has been shown to improve hair loss.
And one study published on Pub Med.gov found that hair growth can be helped by taking a vitamin E supplement.
The study notes: “Patients with alopecia areata generally show lower levels of antioxidants in the scalp area as well as a higher lipid peroxidation index.”
Tocotrienols belong to the vitamin E family and are known to be powerful antioxidants. Therefore, a study was conducted to investigate the effect of tocotrienol supplementation on hair growth in volunteers suffering from alopecia areata.
Twenty-one volunteers were randomly assigned to receive 100 mg of mixed tocotrienols orally daily, while 17 volunteers took oral placebo capsules.
The volunteers were monitored to see the number of hairs in a predetermined area of the scalp.
The study found that the hair number of volunteers in the tocotrienol supplement group “significantly increased” compared to the placebo group, with the first group reporting a 34.5% increase when taking the supplement for eight months compared to a 0.1% decrease for the latter group.
The study explains: “This trial showed that tocotrienol capsule supplementation increased the number of hairs in volunteers with hair loss compared to the placebo group. This observed effect was likely due to the antioxidant activity of tocotrienols that helped reduce lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress in the scalp. which is reported to be linked to alopecia.
There are some treatments that may help treat hair loss and its health, such as “Finasteride” and “Minoxidil”, which are the two main treatments for male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia).
Minoxidil can also be used to treat female-pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia areata) as well. Women should not use some treatments without consulting their doctor because many of them, including minoxidil and finasteride, are not safe for pregnant women or women who want to become pregnant.
According to the National Health Service, some types of hair loss are permanent, such as male or female pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia). It is estimated, for example, that about 40% of women aged 70 or older suffer from alopecia areata.
In addition to alcohol, illness, stress, weight loss, some cancer treatments, and iron deficiency can also be caused by hair loss.
For older women, the hormonal changes associated with menopause also contribute to hair loss.
As we age, there is a tendency for the hair fibers to become thinner and shorter, exposing us to hair loss or graying.
