According to the study, the protein in cow’s milk can lead to inflammation that targets the “insulating layer” around nerve cells, and the researchers were able to prove this link in mice, and they also found evidence of a similar mechanism in humans, so they recommended that people with multiple sclerosis avoid dairy products. .

During the experiments, Stephanie Korten of the Institute of Anatomy at the University Hospital Bonn and the principal investigator of the study, injected experimental mice with different proteins from cow’s milk, to see if there was one of the components related to the symptoms of the disease, and the researchers actually found what they were looking for. They gave casein, the main protein in milk, the mice went on to develop neurological disorders, and electron microscopy showed damage to the insulating layer around nerve fibers, myelin.
In multiple sclerosis, the body’s immune system destroys the myelin sheath, and the consequences range from paresthesia, vision problems, and movement disorders, and in extreme cases, patients end up in a wheelchair, and the insulating sheath was significantly perforated in mice, and this was apparently caused by Take casein.
Courten said in exclusive statements to Asharq Al-Awsat: “I do not know how easy it is to technically remove casein from cow’s milk to produce milk for these patients, because it is one of the main proteins in milk, but we are currently conducting new research, to see if there is only a specific form Of the casein protein that is responsible for the symptoms, so perhaps only removing this form can solve the problem.”
“But, instead, which is much easier, I recommend dairy-free milk such as soy, oat or almond milk.”
