A new analysis of several independent studies has found that tall people are more likely to develop colorectal cancer, or colon tumors that can later become cancerous, than shorter people.
And while the link between taller stature and colorectal cancer has been explored before, scientists at Johns Hopkins University note that the results have been inconsistent.
“This is the largest study of its kind to date and proves that height is an overlooked risk factor,” says Gerard Mullen, MD, assistant professor of gastroenterology and hepatology at Johns Hopkins University.
The scientists caution that the study does not prove a causal relationship and that, unlike age and genes, height should not be considered the dominant risk factor. However, the study confirms a long-standing link between taller height and colorectal cancer risk.
One possible reason for this association is that adult height is related to body organ size, according to Eleanor Chu, MD, co-author of a work whose results showed that taller people in the highest percentile were 24% more likely to develop cancer than the shortest people in the world. lowest percentage.
