The Court of Cassation upheld a State Security Court ruling to imprison a drug dealer for more than a year after being convicted of drug possession in Amman.
The State Security Court declared the accused guilty of possessing less than half a kilogram of hashish on February 2, 2020, in the Sahab area for his personal use.
The State Security Court sentenced the accused to three years in prison for the crime of possessing illegal narcotics and ordered him to pay a fine of 1,000 dinars.
But the court decided to reduce the penalty to 16 months in prison and reduce the fine to 500 dinars to give the accused a “second chance at life.”
The court documents said that the accused was riding in his car in the Sahab area when a police patrol tried to stop him, but he refused to stop and drove his car, “and collided with a police car while fleeing.”
After a short car chase, “the police managed to arrest the accused.” When searching the car, the police found a cigarette inside the car.
Court papers added that investigators went to the defendant’s home where they found more illegal drugs.
The defendant challenged the SSC’s ruling through his lawyer, who argued that the court “did not provide strong evidence to implicate his client.”
Meanwhile, the Public Prosecution Office of the State Security Court requested the Court of Cassation to uphold the sentence and the fine imposed on the accused.
The Court of Cassation confirmed that the State Security Court had followed the correct procedures in handing down judgments against the defendant.
