A national survey conducted by the Jerusalem Center for Political Studies found that the difficult economic situation is the reason why 80% of Jordanian youth give up the dream of pursuing higher education.

Poor academic achievement was the second obstacle, according to the study, the results of which also showed that 71.9% of respondents consider a university degree to be important, while 26.9% see it as “unnecessary.”

Getting better job opportunities This was the reason why 63.5% of the sample confirmed the necessity of obtaining a university degree. And 25.1 per cent believe that a university degree gives them a high social standing.

About 22.1 percent of those who did not complete a college education blamed their poor academic achievement, according to the study, whose authors say this particular finding raises the question of the need for effective treatment programs and counseling for these students.

The economist Jawad Al-Anani said that there is a large surplus of students and graduates in many disciplines because access to higher education has become a pattern, and urged a reconsideration of educational policy-making to direct school graduates towards the education required in the labor market.

Al-Anani added that the study emphasizes the need to reorient education, stressing that no more than 25 percent of high school graduates should enroll in universities. For the rest, studying for four years is a waste of time.

Al-Anani pointed out that youth today may be more rational than the policy makers themselves, adding that the Ministry of Higher Education is responsible for prioritizing the development of an appropriate plan for the workforce.

In turn, Professor of Sociology at the University of Jordan, Hussein Al-Khuzaie, said that while many young people cannot afford university studies due to the economic situation, university degree holders suffer from unemployment.

Al-Khuzaei added that young people “suffer from disappointment, tension and frustration due to the economic situation,” and that a degree is no longer the way to start a career and build a life. As a result, the cost of education has become an economic burden on students and their families as there is no return on this investment.

Al-Khuzaie stressed that the worst aspect of this issue is the bleak outlook towards education and universities, which has become a factor pushing the unemployment rate to rise.

He said that the difficult economic situation casts a shadow on young people and heads of families, and makes them feel helpless. As a result, young people may reach a psychological state where they lose hope and develop sociopathic attitudes towards society, noting that 66 percent of crimes in Jordan are economically motivated.

He also said that “there are well-founded concerns that uneducated or unemployed youth may engage in violence.”
