The hashtag #Expulsion_the_Indian_Ambassador topped the list of hashtags on Twitter in Jordan, where those interacting with the hashtag express their anger at what they called “systematic violations against Muslims in India and the suppression of veiled women”, calling at the same time to boycott Indian goods.
Days ago, the social media giant Twitter removed a cartoon of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) showing Muslim men in skull caps hanging from a noose.
The party unit in the western state of Gujarat posted the cartoon on its official social media account praising a special court in the state for its death sentence on 38 convicts in a series of bombings that rocked Ahmedabad in 2008.
The caricature showed the men hanging from a noose with the words “Satyamev Jayati” (only the truth can win) as well as “No mercy for the perpetrators of terrorism”.
The post sparked massive outrage on social media, with people criticizing the ruling party for its “anti-Muslim” post.
Muslim leader and Indian Member of Parliament Asaduddin Al Owaisi wrote on Twitter: “Cartoons were widely used in the genocides of Jews in Germany and Tutsis in Rwanda. We expect nothing better from the BJP, but should we assume that this appeals to BJP voters?”
Sanjay Jha, a former spokesperson for the ruling party’s main opposition Indian National Congress, criticized, “So, an anti-Muslim hate declaration was supported by the BJP in Gujarat. Remove Twitter. Is this the new India? wrote on Twitter.
He also said that “all those who voted for the BJP” and Prime Minister Narendra Modi “are stakeholders in the disintegration of our secular democracy”.
But the BJP said it was not against any community, and the BJP media cell coordinator in Gujarat said, “We had no intention of targeting any community through drawing. It was based on photos of the convicts that were published in the newspapers. But anti-social elements have reported this and it has been removed by Twitter and other platforms as well.”
