A recent study warned that young adults suffer strokes at a higher rate than most healthcare professionals realize.
The study also revealed that women are more likely than men to suffer from strokes, which are caused by blood clots traveling to the brain.
The study was conducted by faculty at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Dr. Michelle Lippert, and Dr. Sharon Poisson.
The team found that in adults 35 or younger, women were 44% more likely to have ischemic strokes than men.
Ischemic strokes, the most common type of stroke, occur when a blood clot blocks the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain.
It is known that this condition can be life-threatening, and Dr. Poisson explained in detail the main early warning signs of a stroke, which include paralysis of one side of the body, as when the arms are raised and one falls down involuntarily, this may indicate warnings early stroke.
Other major symptoms of stroke include:
Sudden change in balance
Sudden change in vision
– Dizziness
– confusion
Difficulty walking
– Unclear words
Dr. Poisson points out that stroke can occur at any age, which requires that symptoms should not be ignored.
“We know that things like high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking and high cholesterol are risk factors for stroke and can contribute to stroke even in young adults. Preventing these risk factors is really critical for everyone,” Poisson said.
silent strokes
The American Heart Association (AHA) says that silent strokes are undetected strokes.
“It occurs when a blockage in the blood vessels in the brain causes cell death, but without obvious warning signs or symptoms,” she explains.
