Recent studies have shown that cancer may be linked to dietary factors, and one drink is often promoted due to its antioxidant activity, which has been linked to cancer.
There is a popular belief that black tea can reduce the risk of several types of cancer by providing protection from free radicals.
However, most evidence for such claims comes from animal studies, and a few trials have shown similar effects in humans.
What’s more, in several human studies, results have shown that black tea “does not reduce the risk of breast cancer or any other type of cancer.”
In fact, a study identified black tea as a significant risk factor for breast cancer.
It reviewed an analysis of 41 prospective studies involving more than three million people, 49,103 of whom had cancer.
Subgroup analysis showed that an increased consumption of three cups of black tea per day was a significant risk factor for breast cancer.
The findings were later supported by a study that included a meta-analysis of 13 articles looking at the effects of green and black tea consumption.
It was concluded that the data revealed a possible effect of black tea on breast cancer. The results were also replicated in a large prospective study in the Netherlands, which observed an increased risk of breast cancer among consumers who consumed five or more cups per day.
