The Court of Cassation upheld a ruling issued by the Criminal Court, to imprison a financially troubled citizen for 20 years after being convicted of trying to kill his father in 2019.
In July 2020, the Criminal Court ruled to convict the defendant of shooting his father, following a “severe argument,” and sentenced the defendant to the maximum penalty.
The court papers said that the defendant had a great debt and asked his father to help him, but he refused, so that the defendant decided to take revenge by “killing his father.”
The court confirmed that on the day of the attempted murder, the accused covered his face and went to his father’s house, “and at the moment he saw him, he fired two bullets at his father and fled.”
The court papers added that the victim survived the assault after undergoing surgery in a nearby hospital. The doctors treating the hospital said that the injuries were life-threatening and that he survived after medical intervention.
While the defendant appealed the ruling of the Criminal Court on the grounds that “the prosecution failed to provide strong evidence to convict him of the charges against him,” the Public Prosecutor of the Criminal Court requested the Court of Cassation to uphold the ruling.
The Court of Cassation ruled that the criminal court’s procedures were meticulous and that the accused had been sentenced to the appropriate penalty.
