The Court of Cassation upheld a ruling issued by the Criminal Court, according to which a man was sentenced to three years in prison after being convicted of molesting a girl in Karak governorate in October 2020.
The court ruled that the defendant was guilty of molesting a 17-year-old girl in a secluded area and sentenced him to the maximum penalty.
Court papers said that the victim met the defendant while leaving school, and the two exchanged phone numbers and started chatting on various social media.
According to court records, “the defendant persuaded the teen to go with him for a ride, and took her to a secluded area where he molested her.”
According to court papers, the defendant drove the victim home and informed her mother of what had happened to her. The victim’s family immediately filed a complaint with the police and the accused was arrested.
For his part, the defendant appealed the verdict through his lawyer, claiming that the prosecution did not present any “strong evidence” implicating him.
The defense claimed that the victim had given contradictory statements and that “the sexual activities were consensual,” according to court papers.
Meanwhile, the Public Prosecutor of the Criminal Court demanded that the Court of Cassation uphold the verdict, and the latter ruled that the procedures of the Assize Court were accurate and that the accused had been sentenced to the appropriate punishment.
