The head of the Syndicate of Restaurant and Sweets Owners, Omar Al-Awwad, revealed that some popular restaurants have raised the prices of their products, including shawarma, indicating that these restaurants are either subject to tax or have floated their prices.

Al-Awwad denied the issuance of any decision to raise the prices of shawarma in general, explaining that the items are still sold in all restaurants within the specified ceilings, and there are no violations.

Commenting on the increase in the prices of food items offered by popular restaurants, Al-Awwad said that we asked the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply for a proposal to raise the prices of sandwiches by 5 piasters. This is due to reasons related to the high cost prices globally.

Al-Awwad added to “Jordan News”, recently, that the request was rejected by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply, who confirmed that international prices did not rise, knowing that the rise in prices is proven and known, as the price of a ton of chickpeas reached 950 dinars after its price was 250 dinars. Just.

He pointed out that the price of a can of oil, which was sold for 14 dinars, increased to 27 dinars, and that the price of 20 kilograms of lemon salt rose from 18 dinars to 85 dinars.

Al-Awwad pointed out that the law allows restaurant owners to register for sales tax and raise the prices of sandwiches and other sales at any price that suits them without oversight or interference from the union or from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, indicating that this is what happened or may happen with many restaurant owners, especially those facing losses in its sales.

He pointed out that this approach of the ministry did not protect the citizen and preserve his interests and offer him preferential prices within the reach of all segments and groups of society, explaining that this trend contributes to raising prices, especially since the value of the tax is incurred by the citizen or the customer while the restaurant owners benefit because they doubled the selling prices of their products. .

Al-Awwad stressed that the ministry did not respond to the union’s demands throughout the past period, despite the losses suffered by the restaurant sector, and that the ministry contributed to the unsteadiness of prices and lost power over any restaurant that floats its prices after paying the tax.
